What are they?
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), also known as oxitriptan (INN), is a naturally occurring amino acid and chemical precursor as well as a metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitters serotonin and melatonin from tryptophan. L-Tyrosine (Tyr or Y) or 4-hydroxyphenylalanine, is one of the 22 amino acids that are used by cells to synthesize proteins. It is a non-essential amino acid with a polar side group. So both of them originally come from Amino Acids.
Twenty percent of the human body is made up of protein. Protein plays a crucial role in almost all biological processes and amino acids are the building blocks of it. A large proportion of our cells, muscles and tissue is made up of amino acids, meaning they carry out many important bodily functions, such as giving cells their structure. They also play a key role in the transport and the storage of nutrients. Amino acids have an influence on the function of organs, glands, tendons and arteries. They are furthermore essential for healing wounds and repairing tissue, especially in the muscles, bones, skin and hair as well as for the removal of all kinds of waste deposits produced in connection with the metabolism.
Alternative Treatment of Depression and Insomnia
Do you know that 5-HTP and L-Tyrosine are being used as an alternative treatment for depression and Insomnia. 5-HTP has been used for a variety of conditions including anxiety, various sleep disorders, hyperactivity disorders, cerebellar ataxia, depression, primary fibromyalgia syndrome, and migraines. L-Tyrosine is one of the amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein. The body makes tyrosine from another amino acid called phenylalanine. Tyrosine can also be found in dairy products, meats, fish, eggs, nuts, beans, oats, and wheat. People take L-tyrosine for depression, attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the inability to stay awake (narcolepsy), and improving alertness following sleep deprivation. It is also used for stress, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), alcohol and cocaine withdrawal, heart disease and stroke, ED (erectile dysfunction), loss of interest in sex, schizophrenia, and as a suntan agent and appetite suppressant.
However, medicinal use of 5-HTP and L-Tyrosine have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and much of the information available regarding 5-HTP’s and L-Tyrosine use is anecdotal and not supported by research.
5-HTP is a naturally-occurring chemical in the body and is a building block to serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that helps moderate the transmission of signals between nerve cells. Low levels of serotonin are believed to contribute to depression.
L-Tyrosine is used to produce noradrenaline and dopamine; supplemental appears to be anti-stress for acute stressors (which tend to deplete noradrenaline) and may preserve stress-induced memory deficits.
What About Antidepressants?
If you are against to medical antidepressants, then maybe you should give a try to 5-HTP and L-Tyrosine. They can be good alternatives of antidepressants with very few side effects. But always be aware of these chemicals status. They are not approved for any health problem from professionals and there are very few research about them.
Side effects are modest but if you like to listen yourself, have a look at 5-HTP side effects:
- Diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting
- Heartburn, gas, or bloating
- Stomach discomfort or pain
- Decrease in or lack of appetite
And side effect of L-Tyrosine are:
- Joint pain
These chemicals are “likely safely” and their usage is not recommended over 3 months. After 3 months, you should give a break and you should understand your situation. After 1 or 2 months pass period, you might try a second 3 months period.
I am using L-Tyrosine and 5-HTP since one month. Until now, everything is ok. I gave up Zoloft (Lustral) as cold turkey 3 months ago. These amino acids quite good successor of Zoloft (Lustral) until now. My dosage and regime are like this: Morning, after breakfast 1000 mg L-Tyrosine (Solgar Brand) and before 1 hour from sleep, 100 mg 5-HTP (Solgar Brand). 99% of Zoloft’s side effects are non-existent. My appetite was rasped severely and when i put my head on pillow, i can fall in sleep within 5 minutes, I am still feeling little anxiety but my depression went out, that these are life savers for me. Please don’t hesitate to ask me more questions about my short time experience. I am open for all questions.
